How Sonar WorksSonar technology is based on sound waves. The 500 Series™ Fishfinder usessonar to locate and define structure, bottom contour and composition, as wellas depth directly below the transducer.Your 500 Series™ Fishfinder sends a sound wave signal and determinesdistance by measuring the time between the transmission of the sound waveand when the sound wave is reflected off of an object; it then uses the reflectedsignal to interpret location, size, and composition of an object.Sonar

When all the echoes are viewed side by side, aneasy to interpret “graph“ of the bottom, fish, andstructure appears. The sound pulses are transmitted at variousfrequencies depending on the application. Veryhigh frequencies (455 kHz) are used for greatestdefinition but the operating depth is limited. Highfrequencies (200 kHz) are commonly used onconsumer sonar and provide a good balancebetween depth performance and resolution. Lowfrequencies (83 kHz) are typically used to achievegreater depth c

DualBeam PLUS™ Sonar(DualBeam PLUS™ models only[587ci HD, 597ci HD])Your 587ci HD/597ci HD Fishfinder uses a200/83 kHz DualBeam PLUS™ sonar system witha wide (60°) area of coverage. DualBeam PLUS™sonar has a narrowly focused 20° center beam, surrounded by a second beam of 60°, expandingyour coverage to an area equal to your depth. In20 feet of water, the wider beam covers an area20 feet wide.DualBeam PLUS™ sonar returns can be blendedtogether, viewed separately, or compared sideby-si

The DownImaging™ transducer scans the water withrazor-thin, high-definition beams. The beamsare wide (side to side) but very thin front toback. The Down Imaging™ beams can be operatedat two frequencies: 455 kHz (75°) or 800 kHz(45°). Select 455 kHz for the best overallimage quality

Xtreme Depth Sonar(Xtreme Depth Series™ models only [597ci HD XD])Your 597ci HD XD Fishfinder uses the XDtransducer to provide extreme depth coveragewith DualBeam PLUS™ technology. The Xtreme Depth sonar beams can be operatedat two frequencies: 50 kHz (74°) and 200 kHz(20°). The wide, 50 kHz beam transmits at a lowfrequency to provide greater depth coverage, upto 2500 ft (762 m). The narrow, 200 kHz centerbeam transmits at a high frequency to providemaximum detail at shallower depths. The Du

Dual Beam Ice Transducer(with optional-purchase XI 9 20 IceTransducer)The XI 9 20 Ice Transducer providesselectable dual-frequency sonar with awide area of coverage. Selectable dualfrequency gives you the option of twobeams, and both beams will cover thebottom and provide high definition. The20° center beam provides the highestdefinition, while the 60° beam provideswider coverage. Depth capability isaffected by such factors as bottomhardness and water conditions. How GPS WorksYour 500 Series™ Fishfinder also supports GPS (Global Positioning System) andchartplotting. It uses GPS and sonar to determine your position, display it on agrid, and provide detailed underwater information.GPS uses a constellation of satellites thatcontinually send radio signals to the earth. TheGPS receiver on your boat receives signals fromsatellites that are visible to it. Based on timedifferences between each received signal, the GPSreceiver determines its distance to each sa
